Aquaponics

Aquaponics

Aquaponics at it's simplest is growing fish and leafy greens in close to a closed loop. Black soldier fly larvae added to this mix provides organic waste processing, which feeds the fish, leading to no external input needed. Add laying ducks (lay as well as chickens), and you get clean up the adult black soldier flies after breeding. Add worms to clean up what little the black soldier flies leave, crayfish to clean the bottom of fish/crayfish tanks, duckweed, and you could feed yourself for a very long time in an emergency as long as you had light for the plants. Add adjustable reflectors for winter in temperate zones like solar ovens, and now you have high food production year round for minimal energy input beyond solar. Expanding the size and diversity of home sized arcologies to city sized arcologies will add stability and reliability. Having most homes with an attached simple aquaponics systems not only eliminates the middlemen, but also makes food extremely fresh, and provides an environment that most people find enjoyable.

Move arcologies up to orbital rings, and earth could be returned to an ecological paradise. Once the population can easily and cheaply escape the Earth's gravity well, the stars are truly the limit, even with today's technology. Not to mention easy and abundant access to a no maintenance fusion powerplant, our Sun.

IA Discussion

Aqaphonics with vertical gardening and multi-level fish-tanks as well increase the harvesting. I have friends doing it with very creative ways increased the quantity of water and with it the number of fish.

Or you take it to a whole new level of efficiency with an aquaponic system that delivers nutrients via a high pressure aeroponic system. You can reduce the amount of water required by about 70 % while boosting crop output massively. I think NASA tested these systems to grow crops in low gravity environments.

Aquaponics on any type of self sufficient level is a sweet science. Most people who attempt aquaponics assume you just put.fish in water and plants on top.....it's much more specific and technical than that.

aeroponics/aquaponics are almost impossible to pull off due to the misters getting clogged but if energy isn't a problem you can use deep water propogation (lots of air bubbles) without blockage because of continuous positive pressure and filters.
